Strawberry Syrup.

When late spring comes around and strawberries get cheaper, it's the perfect time to make strawberry syrup or jam. I started making strawberry syrup last year. It's simple to make and tastes great, so it's ideal as a dessert for the whole famil.
늦봄이 되면 딸기 가격이 저렴해지면서 딸기청이나 딸기잼을 만들기 좋은 시기가 됩니다. 작년부터 저는 딸기청을 만들기 시작했습니다. 만들기도 간단하면서 맛도 좋아서 가족 모두의 디저트로 손색이 없습니다.

First, wash the strawberries, remove the stems, and dry them thoroughly. Put them in a bowl and mash them with a masher or fork. When they have released some juice, add white sugar and stir until it dissolves. That's all there is to it.
먼저 딸기를 깨끗이 씻고 꼭지를 딴 다음 물기를 완전히 제거합니다. 그릇에 딸기를 담고 매셔나 포크로 과육을 뭉개 줍니다. 딸기물이 적당히 생기면 흰 설탕을 넣어 녹을 때까지 저어 줍니다. 그러면 완성입니다.

Finally, pour the syrup into a sterilized glass jar and seal it tightly. Leave it upside down for about a day, and then store it in the fridge. It keeps for about a month. Unlike strawberry jam, which needs to be simmered over heat, strawberry syrup is much easier to make and just as delicious.

I have been an elementary school teacher for 31 years. In 2024, I took a sabbatical year for research. During that year, I read academic papers related to my research topic, wrote reports, and learned a lot. But what I loved most of all was finally having the chance to study the things I’d always wanted to.
저는 교직 경력 31년차 초등학교 교사입니다. 2024년에 1년 동안 교사 연구년을 보냈습니다. 1년 동안 연구 주제에 관한 논문도 읽고, 보고서도 작성하며 많은 것을 배웠습니다. 하지만 무엇보다 제가 늘 하고 싶었던 것들을 마침내 배울 수 있게 되어 너무 좋았습니다.

I read books every week and attended a book club. I also took a class on writing essays, went to an English academy, and took piano and cello lessons. In the evenings, I even joined a Zumba dance class. On top of that, I subscribed to “입트영” and “귀트영” and studied diligently. With so much on my plate, I was busier than when I was working full-time at school.

In 2015, my husband was assigned to work in the U.S. for two years. We began our life in America in a sleepy town in Lake Charles, southern Louisiana.

우리 집 미소 지킴이, 가지.

<말하기 연습>
My family's dog, Gaji, just turned four this year. I live abroad, so I only get to see her for about a month each year when I visit my parents. But even from afar, Gaji gives me the motivation I need to get through another year overseas.
우리집 강아지, 가지는 올해 네 살이 되었다. 해외에서 거주하고 있는 나는 1년 중 부모님을 방문하는 한 달 정도밖에 가지를 보지 못한다. 하지만 멀리 있어도 가지는 나에게 또 1년의 해외생활을 버티게 하는 큰 원동력이 된다.

When I first met her, I just thought of her as a dog. But as time went on, I realized dogs have emotions and can deeply connect with people.
가지를 처음 만났을 때, 단순히 강아지라고만 생각했었다. 하지만 시간이 지날수록 강아지도 감정이 있고 사람과 깊이 교감을 한다는 것을 느끼게 되었다.

Gaji has become part of our family and brings us joy every day. I'm especially grateful for the way she has given my father newfound energy after his retirement. Thanks to Gaji, he is getting over his slump. Sometimes, I think pet dogs might be even better than children.

<말하기 연습>
Durian, known as “the fruit of heaven and hell,” is grown in Thailand. Despite its terrible stench, many people love it for its unique flavor. It’s rich in potassium, which helps flush out sodium and prevents inflammation in the body.
지옥의 향과 천국의 맛으로 알려진 두리안은 태국에서 생산된다. 지독한 냄새에도 불구하고 특유의 한 맛 때문에 많은 이들이 좋아한다. 두리안은 칼륨이 풍부해 나트륨을 배출하고 몸에 염증을 예방 한다고 한다.

I’ll never forget the first whiff of durian when I visited a shopping mall in China. It smelled so bad that I didn’t even want to have a taste. My husband is the only one in our family who actually likes it. Whenever he buys some, he eats it alone in a room with the windows wide open.
