How My Son Reads Newspapers.
아들의 신문 읽기.

<말하기 연습>
When my son was in fourth grade, there was a BB gun he had his heart set on. I told him l'd buy it for him, but only if he started reading the newspaper. We made a deal. He would read one news article every Sunday, and write a three-line summary.
아들이 초등학교 4학년 무렵, 갖고 싶어 하던 비비탄 총이 있었습니다. 저는 '신문 읽기'를 하면 그것을 사 주겠다고 제안했습니다. 매주 일요일 신문 기사 하나를 읽고 세 줄로 요약해서 쓰기로 약속했습니다.

He accepted the offer, since he really wanted that BB gun. So every week, we'd sit down together, read an article, and talk it through. In the three months it took before he finally got his gift, reading the paper turned into a habit. Even after that, we kept it up all the way through middle school.
아들은 비비탄 총을 너무 갖고 싶어서 제안을 받아들였고, 우리는 매주 머리 맞대고 않아 기사를 읽으며 토론했습니다. 마짐내 선물을 받기까지의 3개월 동안 신문 읽기는 자연스럽게 습관이 되었고, 그 후로도 이 약속은 중학교 때까지 꾸준히 이어졌습니다.

That may be why he's always done well in Korean and English. By reading the newspaper, he naturally built up his vocabulary and reading comprehension. But what matters to me even more than the grades is the steady reading habit he developed at a young age.
그 덕분인지 아들은 국어와 영어에서 늘 우수한 점수를 받았습니다. 신문 읽기를 통해 어휘력과 문해력을 자연스럽게 터득한 것입니다. 그렇지만 저는 성적보다 더 값진 것은 어린 시절부터 쌓아온 이 성실한 독서 습관이라고 생각합니다.
