My childhood dream was to travel the world and experience many cultures. I believe that meeting friends while traveling would motivate me even further, so that I had international pen pals during my middle and high school years. At one point, I exchanged letters with a whopping 33 foreign friends. It was a truly enriching cultural experience for me.
어린 시절 저의 꿈은 세계 곳곳을 여행하며 다양한 문화를 접하는 것이었습니다. 여행하면서 친구를 만날 수 있으면 더욱 멋진 동기부여가 될 거라고 생각해서 저는 중고등학교 시절에 해외 펜팔을 했습니다. 한때는 무려 33명의 외국 친구들과 편지를 교류하기도 했답니다. 저에게는 정말 유익한 문화 체험이었어요.

As I entered college, got married, and focused on my career, I stopped corresponding with pen pals. However, I came across an opportunity two years ago, and I started pen palling with friends overseas again. Now, I use apps to write to pen pals. I enjoy the feeling of anticipation as I wait for replies. It brings back the innocent emotions of my childhood.
대학에 들어가고, 결혼을 하고, 제 커리어에 집중하면서 펜팔을 중단했습니다. 그러다가 2년 전에 우연한 계기가 생겨서 외국 친구와의 펜팔을 다시 시작했습니다. 이제는 앱을 이용해서 펜팔을 하는데, 답장을 기다리면서 느끼는 기대감으로 즐겁습니다. 어린 시절의 풋풋한 감성을 떠올리게 하기 때문입니다.

To me, having pen pals is vicarious experience, just like traveling oversears to experience cultures from all around the world. When I retire not too long from now, I hope to travel to different countries and meet my pen pals in person, creating fond memories.
