Korea's Water Supply. 우리나라 상수도 급수.

When I punch out at night and come home, I see real-time figures on a bulletin board in an underground walkway showing the water quality in our neighborhood. Here's how the water supply system in Korea works.
저녁에 퇴근하고 집으로 올 때면 지하 차도에 있는 게시판에 실시간으로 우리 동네 상수도 수질을 나타내는 수치들이 눈에 들어온다. 우리나라의 상수도 급수 체계는 다음과 같다.

Water is taken from a river and sent to a water intake facility. Then, it goes through several stages to arrive at a water treatment plant. The water is purified to a potable level and sent to a reservoir. Finally, it is supplied to each location where it is in demand through a network of pipelines.
강에서 끌어온 물이 취수장으로 보내진다. 그러고 나서 여러 단계를 거쳐 정수장으로 보내진다. 정수장에서는 마실 수 있는 수준으로 물을 정화하여 배수지로 보내진다. 마지막으로 급수관로를 통하여 수요가 있는 각지에 물이 공급된다.

In this way, producing drinking water requires the efforts of many people. Despite all these efforts, many Korean people still distrust tap water. They prefer to buy bottled water from grocery stores. I long for the good old days when people drank water directly from the tap.
이처럼 우리가 음용할 수 있는 물을 만드는 데는 많은 사람들의 노력이 필요하다. 이러한 노력에도 불구하고 우리나라의 많은 사람들은 여전히 상수도를 믿지 못하고, 마트에서 병에 든 생수를 사다 마신다. 나는 수도꼭지에서 나오는 물을 바로 마시던 옛 시절이 그리워진다.
