For most people, the term "clinical trial" brings to mind experiments on people to test the effects of newly developed drugs. But there are also clinical trials that use medications that have been put to use already.
임상 시험이라고 하면 대부분의 사람들은 신약의 효능을 확인하기 위해 사람을 대상으로 하는 시험이라고 생각하기 쉽다. 그렇지만 기존에 사용되고 있는 약을 이용하는 임상 시험도 있다.

The purpose of clinical trials is to evaluate the medicinal effectiveness of various drugs on the human body. The test subjects are people, because the trials are aimed at proving the safety and effectiveness of certain drugs.
임상 시험의 목적은 여러 가지 약이 인체에 미치는 영향을 평가하기 위한 것이다. 특정 약의 안전성과 유효성을 증명하기 위한 시험이므로 사람을 대상으로 실시한다.

Of course, these trials are preceded by various lab tests and animal tests before the drugs are administered to human subjects. Since a clinical trial involves people, the protocol must be scientifically valid and ethically sound.
물론, 약물을 사람에게 투약하기 전에 다양한 사전 실험과 동물을 대상으로 하는 실험이 선행된다. 임상 시험은 사람을 대상으로 하기 때문에 계획서가 과학적으로 타당하고 윤리적으로 문제가 없어야 한다.

Participants with hard-to-cure diseases can get the opportunity to try out new treatment nearly free of charge. As an added bonus, they can feel a sense of accomplishment by contributing to the development of new drugs.
