The Sacrifices of Lab Animals.
실험 동물의 희생.
At my job, we use lab animals in search of new drug cadidates. Simply put, drugs in development are administered to animals, and we observe the medicinal effects or check how they are absorbed and metabolized. So far, there is no replacement for animal testing for the development of new drugs.
저는 실험동물을 이용해 신약 후보 물질을 발굴해 내는 일을 하고 있어요. 쉽게 말하자면, 개발 중인 물질을 동물에게 투여해서 약의 효능을 관찰하거나 약의 흡수 및 대사 등을 확인하는 일입니다. 아직까지는 신약 개발을 위한 동물 실험의 대안이 존재하지 않습니다.
I maintain a sense of duty and strictly adhere to the 3Rs Principle. The 3Rs Principle refers to Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement. It means animal experiments are replaced by other tests if at all possible. The number of lab animals is reduced. And the tests are refined to ease the suffering of the animals.
저는 사명감을 가지고 3R원칙을 철저히 준수하며 일합니다. 3R원칙이란 Replacement(대체), Reduction(감소), Refinement(개선)입니다. 가능하다면 동물 실험을 다른 실험으로 대체하고, 실험동물의 수를 줄이고, 동물을 고통을 경감시킬 수 있도록 실험을 개선하는 것입니다.
I hope that through the efforts of scientists, including myself, we will live in a world where nobody, human or animal, ever has to suffer through pain.
