Talk about wedding assistants.
On weekends, I freelance at wedding venus as a wedding assistant. There are many types of wedding assistants, but I specifically work as what's called a "chaperone" in Korea.
"Chaperone" is originally a French word. If refers to someone who would accompany a young woman to social gatherings and look after her. On the day of the wedding, it can be hard for the bride to move about freely when she is in her dress.
So, a chaperone stays by her side to give her a hand during the entire ceremony. Of course, the chaperone also helps to keep the groom looking neat and tidy. A few hours ahead of the wedding, the bride and groom are bound to feel anxious.
That's when the chaperone walks them through the order of the ceremony and helps them to shake off nerves. I am quite happy with my job, since I enjoy seeing people on their happy day and I can earn some money in the process.
저는 주말마다 결혼식장에서 예식 도우미 프리랜서로 일하고 있습니다. 예식 도우미에는 여러 종류가 있는데, 그중에서 저는 특히 한국에서 "샤프롱"이라고 불리는 일을 하고 있습니다.
"샤프롱"이란 원래 프랑스어로, 젊은 여자가 사교 모임을 나갈 때 함께 동반하여 보살펴 주는 사람을 뜻합니다. 결혼식 당일에는 신부는 드레스를 입고 편하게 움직이기가 힘듭니다.
그래서 예식의 시작부터 끝까지 샤프롱이 신부의 곁에 있으면서 도움을 주는 일을 합니다. 물론 신랑의 매무새가 단정히 유지되도록 도와주기도 합니다. 결혼식을 몇 시간 앞두고 있는 신랑과 신부는 긴장을 많이 하기 마련입니다.
그럴 때 샤프롱은 그들에게 예식 순서를 알기 쉽게 설명해 주고, 긴장을 풀 수 있게 도움을 줍니다. 행복한 날을 맞이한 사람들을 보는 것도 즐겁고 동시에 돈도 벌 수 있어서 저는 제 일이 상당히 만족스럽습니다.
