Talk about Korea's Antarctic research base.
Many countries are researching the vast unknown of the Antarctic. Accordingly, Korea currently operates two Antarctic research stations. The King Sejong Station, completed on King George Island in 1998, is one of them. The Jang Bogo Station which launched operations in Terra Nova Bay in 2014 is the other. I currently work as part of the winter maintenance crew of the Jang Bogo Station.
Our team comprises 18 experts, each in their respective field. We are charged with operating the station and keeping it shipshape throuhout the year. The temperature can drops as low as 40 below. Working in such extreme conditions is no walk in the park. But I can see the Southern Lights and the Milky Way, which I couldn't dream of doing in Koera.
Plus, we take pride in the knowledge that our Antarctic research is contributing to Korea's scienntific advancement. That pride is what keeps us going.
많은 나라들이 광활한 미지의 대륙인 남극을 연구하고 있다. 이에 발맞춰 대한민국은 현재 두 곳의 남극 기지를 운영하고 있다. 그중 하나는 1988년에 킹조지 섬에 완공된 세종 과학 기지이고, 나머지 하나는 2014년에 테라노바 만에서 운영을 시작한 장보고 과학 기지이다. 나는 현재 장보고 과학 기지에서 월동대로 근무하는 중이다.
우리 팀은 18명의 각 분야 전문가들로 구성되어 있다. 우리는 1년 동안 기지를 운영하고 원활하게 관리하는 임무를 맡는다. 기온이 영하 40도까지 내려가는데, 이처럼 극한의 환경에서 근무하는 것은 결코 쉽지 않은 일이다. 그러나 한국에서는 꿈도 꿀 수 없는 오로라와 은하수를 볼 수 있다.
게다가 남극 연구를 통해 대한민국의 과학 발전에 일조하고 있다는 것에 자부심을 느낀다. 그러한 자부심이 있기에 우리 대원들은 견딜 수 있다.
