Talk about puppy walking.
"Puppy walking" is a form of community service. It involves looking after a puppy for about a year, before it becomes a service dog for people with visual, hearing, or mobility handicaps. The pups receive some light training and learn to socialize.
8 years ago, my husband and I were entrusted with the care of Podo and Salgu, two pups who would become service dogs. We provided for them for a year. We taught them to take public transport, use crosswalks, and avoid charging at people. We were sad to see them go when we returned Podo and Salgu to the center after a year. Unfortunately, Podo crossed the rainbow bridge early due to enteritis. But Salgu is hard at work as a guide dog.
Service dogs have to practice restraint in various aspects of life. That's why the warm, happy memories of living with puppy walkers offer them comfort. I hope that Salgu will live his best life as a guide dog, and that we'll meet again once he retires.
퍼피 워킹은 봉사활동의 일종입니다. 시각, 청각, 지체 장애인들의 도우미 견이 될 강아지를 1년 정도 돌봐주는 것입니다. 이 강아지들은 가벼운 훈련과 사회화를 배우게 됩니다.
8년 전에, 남편과 나는 도우미 견이 될 강아지 2마리 포도와 살구를 위탁 받아 1년 동안 양육했습니다. 우리는 대중교통 타기, 횡단보도 건너기, 사람들에게 달려들지 않기 훈련을 가볍게 했습니다. 1년 뒤에 센터로 다시 돌려보낼때 가는 것을 보는 것이 슬펐습니다. 그런데 안타깝게도 포도는 장염으로 일찍 하늘나라로 갔습니다. 하지만 살구는 도우미 견이 되어 열심히 활동을 하고 있습니다.
도우미 견들은 삶의 많은 부분에서 절제하며 살아야 됩니다. 따라서 퍼키워커와 함께 지낸 따뜻하고 행복했던 기억은 그들에게 큰 위안이 된다고 합니다. 나는 살구가 행복한 안내견의 삶을 살다가 은퇴하면 꼭 다시 만나기를 바랍니다.
