책이 만들어지는 과정에 대해 이야기해 주세요.

[Response]

I work as an editor at a publishing house. There are many steps in publishing a book. Project planning comes first. The editorial staff might go over a manuscript from a contributor and publish it. But we might also come up with an idea and recruit a writer to publish a book.

When we receive a manuscript, the editor goes over it with a fine-tooth comb and proofreads it. The copy editor fixes grammatical mistakes and touches up subtitles. Meanwhile, the book’s design takes place at the same time. Keeping in mind the book’s content and target audience, we choose the book size and font. We also design the book’s cover. The publisher pays particular attention to the book’s title and cover.

Finally, there is the back-end work of painting, binding, releasing, distributing, and publicizing the book. After all that, the book finally makes its way to a reader at the booksotre.

나는 한 출판사의 편집자로 일하고 있다. 한 권의 책을 출판하기까지는 여러 단계를 거쳐야 한다. 먼저 프로젝트 기획부터 시작한다. 편집부에서 투고자의 원고를 검토하여 출판하기도 하지만, 어떤 아이디어를 내고 저자를 섭외하여 책을 내기도 한다.

원고가 들어오면, 편집자가 원고를 세밀하게 검토하고 다듬는다. 교열 편집자는 문법적인 오류를 바로 잡고, 책의 소제목을 손본다. 그러는 동안 책 디자인이 동시에 진행된다. 책의 내용과 주 독자층을 고려하여 판형과 서체를 정하고, 책 표지도 디자인을 한다. 책 제목과 표지는 출판사가 특별히 신경을 쓰는 부분이다.

마지막 단계는 인쇄와 제본, 출고와 유통, 홍보 등 후속 작업들이다. 그러고 나면, 마침내 서점을 통해 한 권의 책이 독자의 손에 오르게 된다.
