<말하기 연습>
I turned 60 this year and started the second chapter of my life. Forty years ago, I made a promise with six friends. We all remembered it and kept our promise. None of us got married, either by choice or by circumstance, but we are all still legally single.
나는 올해 60세로 제2의 인생을 시작했다. 40년 전에 여섯 명의 친구들과 함께 했던 약속이 있다. 우리 모두가 그것을 기억하고 약속을 이행했다. 모두 시집을 못간 건지 안 간 건지는 모르겠으나, 어쨌던 우리 모두 아직 법적으로는 독신으로 살고 있다.

I was the reason we all stayed single. I was in a situation where I had to remain unmarried. My friends said they would stand by me, so all six of them have lived the same way. I am the only one living in Korea now, and the others all live abroad. We stay in touch through regular video calls.
우리가 독신을 유지하게 된 동기는 나에게 있었다. 내가 독신으로지내야 하는 상황이었는데, 친구들이 의라를 지키겠다고 하더니, 여섯 명이 모두 나와 동일하게 유지하고 있다. 지금 한국에는 유일하게 나 혼자 살고 있고 친구들은 모두 외국에서 살고 있다. 우리는 정기적으로 화상 통화를 통해 만나고 있다.

Maybe we're still a bit immature, but we sometimes talk about random topics. Once, we discussed 'who is the richest.' We ended up deciding it's people who are single No matter how much money people have, they have to pass it on to their children. So, some people envy us for not having kids.
아직도 철이 덜 들었는지 가끔 엉뚱한 주제를 가지고 대화를 한다. 한번은 '누가 제일 부자인가?'에 대한 대화를 했다. 그 결과 독신들이라는 결론을 내렸다. 주변 사람들을 보면 재산이 아무리 많아도 자식들에게 나눠 줘야 하니, 자식 없는 우리를 오히려 부러워한다는 이유였다.
