Halloween in the States
미국에서 보낸 핼러윈 데이

<말하기 연습>
A long time ago, when I was working in the States, Halloween came around. I was mulling over what costume to get for my first-grade daughter when she asked if she could wear a hanbok, the traditional attire of Korea. I thought it was a brilliant idea. She was probably the only "ghost in a hanbok" not just in her school, but in all of America.
오래전 미국에서 근무할 때 핼러윈 데이를 맞았다. 초등학교 1학년 딸아이의 의상으로 어떤 것을 살까 고민하고 있는데 아이가 한복을 입고 가면 안 되는지 물었다. 나는 너무 좋은 아이디어라고 생각했다. 아마도 그 학교뿐 아니라 미국 전역에서 한복 입은 귀신은 우리 딸 혼자였을 것이다.

Her homeroom teacher came running up to her and gave her a big hug when she saw the hanbok. Other children gathered round. They admired how beautiful the hanbok was, and they all took photos together.
한복을 본 담임 선생님이 아이에게 달려와서 꼭 껴안아 주었다고 한다. 다른 아이들은 한복이 너무 예쁘다고 하면서 모여들어 다 같이 사진을 찍었다고 한다.

My daughter grew up and later lived in New York for two years with her husband and three children. During one of our visits, Halloween happened to fall during our stay. By chance, our granddaughter was also in first grade at the time, and she wore a hanbok to school. I felt so proud and happy. It was like the tradition of the "hanbok ghost" had been passed down.
그 딸이 성장해서 남편과 아이 세 명과 함께 2년 동안 뉴욕에서 살았다. 마침 우리 부부가 방문을 했을 때 핼러윈 데이가 있었다. 공교롭게도 그 당시 초등학교 1학년에 다니는 손녀딸이 한복을 입 고 학교에 갔는데, 그 모습을 보고 너무도 기특하고 행복했다. 마치 한복 귀신의 전통이 대물림된 것 같았다.
