If you want to make friends with foreigners online, there's one thing you should look out for: romance scams. A romance scam is a type of fraud where someone approaches you online and shows an interest in you, builds trust through wealth or looks, and then asks for money for various reasons.
온라인으로 외국인들과 친구가 되고자 한다면, 주의해야 할 점이 하나 있다. 바로 로맨스 스캠이다. 로맨스 스캠이란 온라인상으로 접근해 호감을 표시하면서 재력이나 외모 등으로 신뢰를 형성한 후, 각종 이유로 금전을 요구하는 방법의 사기를 뜻한다.

It seems that scammers have been targeting Koreans learning English by pretending to be foreigners learning Korean. Not long ago, a foreign woman with a beautiful profile picture struck up a conversation with me on a language exchange app.
최근에는 사기꾼들이 영어를 공부하는 한국인들에게 한국어를 배우는 외국인인 것처럼 속이고 접근하는 것 같다. 얼마 전 미모의 프로필 사진을 가진 한 외국 여성이 언어 교환 앱에서 나에게 말을 걸어왔다.

She acted friendly and suggested we move the conversation to another messaging app that was easier to use. At first, I almost fell for it. But then she complimented my appearance in my profile picture, something even my own mother had never done. I immediately caught on that she was a scammer.
그녀는 내게 친근감을 표시하더니 보다 사용이 쉬운 다른 메신저 앱에서 이야기를 계속하자고 했 다. 처음에는 속아 넘어갈 뻔했다. 하지만 곧 나의 프로필 사진 속 외모가 잘생겼다며 내가 어머니에게도 들어 보지 못한 칭찬을 하길래, 단번에 그녀가 사기꾼임을 알아챘다.

A: 맞아. 그런데 갑자기 나한테 급하게 돈을 좀 빌려 달라고 하더라고.

A: 아니, 좀 수상해서 안 빌려줬는데, 어느 순간 계정이 없어졌더라고!
B: 로맨스 스캠의 전형인 것 같네.
