I have worked at a college in Gyeonggi-do Province for 20 years now. Things weren't looking great back when I first took the job, and the conditions that universities face today remain challenging.
저는 경기도에 있는 대학에서 근무한 지 이제 20년이 되었습니다. 제가 처음 입사할 때에도 대학의 환경이 좋지 않았는데, 지금도 여전히 대학이 처한 여건들은 녹록치 않습니다.

The biggest difficulty that I personally feel is the decline in the school-age population. According to data from Statistics Korea, the total admissions quota of universities nationwide was 490,000 students as of 2022. Meanwhile, the entire population of high school seniors was 473,000 students. For the first time ever, the number of high school seniors was lower than the admissions quota of universities.
직접적으로 체감하는 가장 큰 어려움은 학령 인구의 감소입니다.  통계청 자료에 따르면, 2022년도를 기준으로 전국 대학의 입학 정원이 49만 명인데 반해, 고3 학생의 전체 인구가 47만 3천 명으로 집계되었습니다. 역대 처음으로 고3 학생 수가 대학 입학 정원보다 더 적었습니다.

Back when I was in elementary school, there were more than 60 students to a classroom. There were so many classes that we had to split into morning and afternoon shifts for classes. It really makes me feel how things have changed.
제가 초등학교에 다닐 때만 하더라도 한 학급에 60명 이상의 학생들이 있었습니다. 학급 수도 많아 오전반과 오후반으로 나누어야 했던 시절을 생각하면, 정말 격세지감을 느끼게 됩니다.
