Last Saturday afternoon, I met up with my ROTC classmates for the first time in a while. It has been almost 20 years since we first got to know each other, but we actually haven't met face to face very often. After finishing military service, some got married and had children, starting their own families, while others enjoyed the freedom of the single life, so it was difficult to match up our schedules.
지난 토요일 오후, 나는 오랜만에 ROTC 동기들을 만났다. 우리는 서로 알고 지낸 지 거의 20년이 다 되어 가지만, 사실상 우리가 얼굴을 본 적은 많지 않았다. 군 복무를 마친 후, 누군가는 결혼을 해서 아이를 낳고 가정을 꾸리는가 하면, 누군가는 자유롭게 싱글 라이프를 즐기고 있다 보니 일정을 맞추기가 쉽지 않았다.

There was one friend at the gathering whom I hadn't seen in two years. But there was no awkwardness at all, because we had been keeping in touch through social media. We felt like we had gone back in time to our 20s when we first met, ribbing each other and laughing, having a great time. Time flew by, and we wished each other well as we parted ways. It was a day that reminded me of how precious old friends really are.
이번 모임에는 2년 만에 보는 친구도 있었다. 그런데 그동안 SNS로 꾸준히 연락을 해 와서 그런지 전혀 어색함이 없었다. 우리는 처음 만난 20대 그 시절로 돌아간 듯 서로를 놀려 대고 웃으며 즐거운 시간을 보냈다. 시간 가는 줄도 몰랐고, 우리는 서로의 건투를 기원하며 헤어졌다. 오랜 친구들은 참 소중한 존재라는 것을 다시 한번 느낀 하루였다.
