<말하기 연습>
Talk about a time when you almost had a fire accident.
불이 날 뻔한 경험에 대해 이야기해 주세요.

On the eve of my husband's birthday, I cooked some seawood soup. I thought I would let it boil for another 5 minutes and then go to bed, but I went to the bedroom and fell asleep. In the early morning, my husband urgently shook me awake. The house was filled with so much smoke that I couldn't see my own hand. The smell of smoke had seeped into the bedroom throught the open door, waking my husband up.
남편의 생일을 하루 앞둔 밤, 나는 미역국을 끓였다. 5분만 더 끓이고 자야겠다고 생각하다가 그만 방으로 들어가 잠을 자 버렸다. 새벽에 남편이 급히 나를 흔들어 깨웠다. 정말 한 치 앞도 볼 수 없을 정도로 집 안에 연기가 가득 차 있었다. 열어 놓은 문을 통해 연기 냄새가 방으로 스며들어 왔고 이 냄새에 남편이 잠을 깬 것이다.

We opened all the windows and tried to air out the house, but the acrid smell of smoke wouldn't go away. Brown soot had settled on the floor, and I lost count of how many times I wiped down the entire house with a rag.
우리는 창문을 다 열고 집 안을 환기시키려고 했지만, 매캐한 연기 냄새가 빠지질 않았다. 바닥에는 갈색 그을음이 내려앉아서, 온 집안을 손걸레로 몇 번을 닦아 냈는지 모른다.

Overwhelmed by guilt for putting my family in such great danger with my mistake, I couldn't think straight for a while. As I cried, my husband quietly hugged me without a word of criticism. I felt grateful to him for trying to lighten the mood with a joke that it could have been a "burning day" instead of a "birthday."
내 실수로 인해 가족들을 그렇게 큰 위험에 처하게 했다는 죄책감에 망연자실하여 나는 한동안 정신을 차릴 수가 없었다. 남편은 한마디 타박도 없이 울고 있는 나를 조용히 안아 주었다. "birthday"가 아닌 "burning day"가 될 뻔했다는 농담으로 기분을 풀어 주려하는 남편에게 고마운 마음이 들었다.

A: 어제, 가스레인지에 올려 놓은 국을 다 태웠어요.
B: 아이고, 가스 불을 켜 놓고 잊어버렸어요?
A: 소파에서 깜빡 잠이 들어서 완전히 잊어버렸어요.
B: 큰일 날 뻔했네요.
A: 집 안에 연기가 자욱했어요.
B: 냄새 빠지는 데 시간이 꽤 걸릴 거예요.

<영작 연습>
1. 나는 저녁을 요리한 후에 항상 집 안을 환기시킨다.
