Using English Names. 영어 이름 사용하기.

Talk about choosing and using English names.
영어 이름을 만들어서 쓰는 것에 대해 이야기해 주세요.

To start off, I am not in favor of choosing and using English names. Just as we not force foreigners learning Korean to adopt Korean names, I don't think we should require people to have an English name for the sole reason that they are learning English.
먼저 저는 영어 이름을 만들어서 쓰는 것에 찬성하지 않습니다. 우리가 한국어를 배우는 외국인들에게 한국 이름을 지으라고 강요하지 않듯이, 영어를 배운다는 이유만으로 영어 이름을 가져야 한다고 강요하면 안 된다고 생각합니다.

But many private English academies require children to create English names, and in some cases, we need to compromise with reality. I studies abroad in the United States for a brief period, and I did not use an English name. My American friends had no issues pronouncing my Korean name.
그런데 많은 사설 영어 학원에서 아이들에게 영어 이름을 만들라고 요구해서 현실에 타협할 수 밖에 없는 경우가 있습니다. 저는 미국에서 잠깐 유학 생활을 한 적이 있었는데 그때는 영어 이름을 사용하지 않았습니다. 미국 친구들은 제 한국 이름을 발음하는 데 별 어려움이 없었습니다.

However, I had an unpleasnat experience when I returned to Korea and landed a job at an English academy. The director compelled me to use the English name "Jennifer." Since then, I have shortenend my name to "Jenny" and live as if "Jenny" is my seond identity.
그런데 한국에 돌아와서 어학우너에서 일하게 되었을 때 기분이 안 좋았던 경험이 있습니다. 원장님이 저한테 "제니퍼"라는 영어 이름을 쓰도록 강요했습니다. 그 이후 이름을 "제니"로 줄였고, 저의 제 2의 자아가 "제니"인 것처럼 살고 있습니다.

B: 네, 영어 학원 가기 전에 같이 상의해 봤어요.
A: 어떤 이름으로 정하셨어요?
B: 큰 아들은 해리 포터를 좋아하고, 영국 왕자의 이름을 갖고 싶다고 해서 Harry로 지었어요.
A: 둘째 아이는 요?
B: 작은 아들은 스파이더맨을 너무나 좋아해서 Peter라고 부르기로 했어요.
