I live in Sejong City, which has many apratments. I move house every two or three years, and the main reason for moving so frequently has always been noise issues between floors. Why is it that every time I move, my upstairs neighbor is so noisy?
나는 아파트가 많은 세종시에 살고 있다. 2년 또는 3년마다 이사를 하고 있는데, 이렇게 자주 이사를 하는 주된 이유는 항상 층간 소음 때문이었다. 도대체 왜 이사를 할 때마다 위층 이웃이 그렇게 시끄러운 것일까?

I actually wrote in with a story about two years ago, about noise complaints in apartments. It was just so hard for me to bear. My upstairs neighbors at the time arrived home after 10 p.m. and got up very early in the morning. They stomped around, slammed windows and doors shut, and did their laundry late a night.
사살, 나는 2년 전쯤 아파트 층간 소음에 대해 사연을 보낸 적이 있었다. 견디기가 너무 힘들었기 때문이었다. 당시에 위층 이웃은 밤 10시 넘어서 귀가하고 아침에는 매우 일찍 일어났다. 그들은 쿵쿵거리며 걸어 다니고, 창문이나 문을 세게 닫고, 밤늦게 세탁기를 돌렸다.

I even requested mediation from the apartment management office. This meant there was a very awkward meeting in a corner of the super's office with the person who lived upstairs. They had no shame, saying that they had done nothing wrong. I strongly pressed my point. The pain I experienced definitely decreased after that, at least a little. The frequency and intensity of the noise did go down. Even so, I eventually had no choice but to move out of that house.
나는 아파트 관리 사무소에 중재 요청을 하기도 했다. 그래서 관리 사무소 한 켠에서 위층에 사는 분과 매우 어색한 만남도 가졌다. 그분들은 잘못한 게 없다며 뻔뻔하게 나왔고, 나도 매우 강하게 항변을 했다. 그 후로 분명 내가 겪은 고통은 조금이나마 줄어들었다. 확연히 소음의 빈도나 강도가 줄었기 때문이다. 그럼에도 나는 결국 그 집에서 이사를 나갈 수 밖에 없었다.
