A: 배고파 힘드셨겠다! 그렇게 실수하면서 배우는 거지.
B: 그렇지. 비행기 타고 가면서 땅콩하고 크래커만 먹으며 가게 하고 싶진 않아.
A: 참 배려 깊은 마음이네. 남편이 분명히 고마워 할 거야.

Encouraging a Child to Read. 책 읽는 아이 만들기.

<말하기 연습>
With the recent rise of smart devices, it's becoming harder and harder to see people reading printed materials such as books or newspapers. When my daughter was young, I set a daily amount for her to read and made it mandatory. She didn't seem to really get into it, possibly because it was against her will.
최근에 스마트 기기의 부상으로 책이나 신문 등의 인쇄물을 읽는 사람들을 보기가 점차 어려워지고 있다. 내 딸이 어렸을 때 나는 하루에 읽을 책의 양을 정해 놓고 의무적으로 읽게 했다. 아이는 책을 억지로 읽어서 인지 깊게 읽는 것 같지는 않았다.

Then one day, it dawned on me that as a parent, I should set an example for my daughter by reading myself. Then, she would naturally follow suit. So, starting that very day, I began to read in the living room every day after work. I didn't particularly enjoy reading myself, so it was very difficult at first. But after sucking it up for six mninths, my daughter finally took a seat next to me and started reading books on her own.
그러던 어느 날, 부모로서 내가 직접 책을 읽으며 딸아이에게 모범을 보이는 것이 좋겠다는 생각이 들었다. 그러면 아이도 자연스럽게 따라 읽을 것 같았다. 그래서 바로 그날부터 퇴근 후 거실에서 매일 책을 읽기 시작했다. 나도 독서를 그리 좋아하지는 않았던 터라, 처음에는 몹시 힘들었다. 그러나 꾹 참고 6개월을 견뎌 내자, 아이가 마침내 내 옆에 앉아서 스스로 책을 읽기 시작했다.

Now my daughter is in an upper grade of elementary school, and she reads even when she's eating or taking a break. It seems that my setting an example as a parent has rubbed off on her.
지금 아이는 초등학교 고학년이 되었는데, 밥 먹을 때나 쉴 때도 책을 읽는다. 내가 부모로서 먼저 모범을 보였던 것이 아이에게 영향을 끼친 듯하다.

A: 그러면 효과가 있을까요?
B: 네. 저는 그렇게 하니 아이가 자연스럽게 따라 읽더라고요.
