Stem Cell Transplants.
조혈모세포 이식.

Stem cell transplantation is a treatment to save patients suffering from afflictions like leukemia. In the past, it was known as a "bone marrow transplant" because the cells were taken from bone marrow.
조혈모세포 이식은 백혈병 같은 질병을 앓고 있는 환자를 살리는 치료법 중 하나이다. 과거에는 세포를 골수에서 채취했기 때문에 "골수 이식"이라고 불렀다.

But cell collection methods have changed thanks to medical advances, and "stem cell transplant" is now the correct terminology. The donor receives an injection to stimulate the production of stem cells in their body. The transplant is then completed by collecting just the stem cell and transplanting them in the patient. It can be seen as a type of apheresis blood donation.
하지만 의학의 발달로 세포 채취 방식이 달라져서 지금은 "조세모세포 이식"이라는 말이 더 맞는 표현이다. 공여자는 몸 속에서 조혈모세포의 생성을 자극하는 약물을 투여받게 된다. 그렇게 생성된 조혈모세포만을 모아서 환자에게 주입하면 이식은 끝난다. 이것은 일종의 성분헌혈과 같다고 할 수 있다.

It only works on the condition that DNA of the patient and donor are a close match. The donor registration process is pretty straightforward. You visit a local blood bank and declare your intention to donate. Then, you simply wait until there is a patient who is a match.
효과가 있으려면 환자와 공여자의 유전자 정보가 최대한 일치해야 한다는 조건이 있긴 하다. 기증 등록 과정은 비교적 간단하다. 가까운 헌혈의 집에 방문해 기증 의사를 밝히고 나서, 맞는 환자가 있을 때까지 기다리면 된다.
