I am temporarily fostering an abandoned dog for the fourth time. It's a form of community service where I take care of abandoned dogs until they find their forever home. I came to learn 2 years ago that many abandoned dogs are put down. Ever since then, I started to help out with cleaning at animal shelters and eventually fostered dogs myself.
저는 지금 유기견을 4번째 임시 보호하는 중입니다. 유기견들이 평생 가족을 찾을 때까지 돌봐주는 일종의 봉사 활동입니다. 저는 2년 전 수많은 유기견들이 안락사를 당한다는 것을 우연히 알게 되었습니다. 그때 이후로 유기 동물 보호소에서 청소를 돕는 것을 시작으로 임시 보호까지 하게 되었습니다.
When someone mentions abandoned dogs, most people think of mixed breed dogs tied up in rural areas. But many popular breed, like the Maltese I am taking care of now, are also abandoned because they have fallen ill or are getting on in years.
보통 유기견이라고 하면 대부분의 사람들은 시골에 묶여 사는 믹스견을 생각합니다. 하지만 제가 지금 임시 보호하고 있는 말티즈 같은 인기 품종견들도 아프거나 나이가 많다는 이유로 버려집니다.
Abandoned dogs, no matter how young they are, have to be euthanized if no one adopts them during the notice period. Even if they are lucky enough to be rescued, larger dogs aren't easily adopted in Korea, so most of them are adopted oversea.
유기견들은 아무리 어린 강아지라도 공고 기간 내에 아무도 입양해 가지 않으면 안락사를 당하게 됩니다. 운이 좋게 구조가 된다고 해도, 대형견들은 국내 입양이 쉽지 않아서 대부분 해외로 입양을 가게 됩니다.
