Food loss.
Food loss refers to food going to waste perfectly good food is thrown away.
According to the UN Environment Programme(UNEP), 61% of the world's food loss comes from the home. After that is the restaurent industry, followed by retail sales. This took me by surprise, because I thought that food loss was mostly driven by businesss throwing away food in large amounts.
When I went grocery shopping, I had a habit of taking items from the back for goods with a short self life, like milk. I wanted the freshest product, and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to eat something that had passed the expiration date.
These days, I use a service that delivers groceries and daily necessities once a week. I've made it a habit to fully use up everthing that is delivered to me, so we've been able to significantly cut down on food loss in our home.
푸드로스란 "먹을 수 있지만 버려지는 음식"으로 인해 발생하는 식품의 낭비를 의미한다.
유엔환경계획(UNEP)에 따르면, 전 세계 푸드로스의 61퍼센트가 가정에서 배출된다고 한다. 그 다음이 외식 산업, 그리고 소매업 순이라고 한다. 푸드로스의 주된 요인이 음식물을 대량으로 폐기하는 사업체라고 생각했는데, 의외였다.
나는 장을 보러 가면 우유와 같이 유통 기한이 짧은 제품은 안쪽에 있는 것을 고르는 버릇이 있다. 가장 신성한 제품을 사고 싶었고, 유통 기한이 지나서 못 먹게 될까 봐 걱정했던 것이다.
요즘은 일주일에 한 번 씩 식료품이나 생필품을 배달해 주는 서비스를 이용하고 있다. 나에게 배달된 것을 다 소비하는 습관도 생겨서, 우리집의 푸드로스를 많이 줄일 수 있었다.
