Light pollution.
Originally, cicadas only make noise during the daytime. But these days, they even make a racket at night. It's because of light pollution. Light pollution refers to an excessive amount of artificial light that does hard to people and other life forms.
Korea's light pollution index is second only to Italy. On days when the sky is overcast, it gets even brighter. This is because the artificial city lights are reflected off the clouds.
A while ago, I went on vacation in a remote area in the mountains of Ganwon-do province. The sky was so full of stars that it seemed they might spill over. It was so beatiful that it took my breath away. I realized that it's possible to go stargazing in Korea, as long as there is no light pollution. All living things have a right to enjoy the darkness at night, and light must not become a form of torture.
원래 매미들은 낮에만 운다. 하지만 요즘은 매미들이 밤에도 요란하게 울어댄다. 바로 빛 공해 때문이다. "빛 공해"는 사람과 다른 생명체에 피해를 주는 필요 이상의 인공 빛을 말한다.
우리나라는 이탈리아에 이어 두 번째로 빛 공해 지수가 높다. 하늘이 구름으로 뒤덮인 날에는 하늘이 훨씬 더 밝아진다. 이는 도시의 인공조명이 구름에 반사되기 때문이다.
얼마 전에 나는 강원도의 외진 산골로 휴가를 다녀왔다. 쏟아질 듯 하늘에 빼곡히 박힌 별들은 너무 아름다워서 숨이 막힐 정도였다. 우리나라에서도 빛 공해만 없으면 별 구경을 하는 것이 가능하다는 것을 알게 되었다. 모든 생물들은 밤에 어둠을 누릴 권리가 있고 빛이 고문이 되어서는 안된다.
