Describe how you feel about getting older.
When I entered a new decade, going from my 20s to my 30s, I didn't feel a major change. But now, in my 40s, I can really tell the difference in both my body and mind. Once, I had a coughing fit when I swallowed my saliva wrong and it went down the wrong pipe. I dry heaved for so long that I was in tears. When it was all over a few minutes later, it made me wonder what life would be like in my old age.
When I was younger, a 4-day trip abroad wasn't enough to slake my thirst. As soon as I got back, I would try to cheer myself up by planning my next trip. But these days, I need time to muster up the energy just to go to the local grocery store. I am really feeling my age in many ways lately.
20대에서 30대로 내 나이의 앞자리가 바뀔때에는 변화를 크게 못 느꼈다. 그런데 지금 40대가 디니, 몸과 마음이 모두 달라진 것을 정말 실감한다. 한 번은 침을 잘못 삼켜 사레가 심하게 들려서, 발작성 기침을 하게 됐다. 한참을 헛구역질을 하다가 눈물까지 흘렸다. 몇 분 뒤 소동이 잠잠해졌고, 그로 인해 나는 노년의 모습이 어떨지 상상해 보게 됐다.
젊었을 때는 3박 4일간의 해외여행으로는 만족이 안 되었다. 여행에서 돌아오자마자 다음 여행을 계획하며 아쉬움을 달래기도 했다. 그런데 요즘은 동네 마트에만 나가려고 해도 기운을 낼 시간이 필요하다. 최근에 여러모로 정말 나이가 들었음을 느끼고 있다.
