Hoisting the taegeukgi.
I plan to hoist the Taegeukgi with my child on June 6th, Korea's Memorial Day. When I was young, we did this as a matter of course on national holidays. But nowadays, not a lot of homes seem to take part. People only think of national holidays as days to get some R and R or to travel. They don't meditate on the people who sacrificed themselves for our country.
We hoist the Taegeukgi for the five major national holidays, and for Armed Forces Day. The five major holidays are the Independence Movement Day, Constitution Day, National Liberation Day, National Foundation Day, and Hangeul Day. Memorial Day is a day for offering condolences, so the Taegeukgi is raised a little differently. We fly the flag at half-staff. It is lowered from the top by as much as the height of the flag.
On June 6th, I will hoist the Taegeukgi and observe a moment of silence. I want to express my gratitude to the people who selflessly protected our country.
태극기 달기.
저는 6월 6일 현충일에 아이와 함께 태극기를 달려고 합니다. 제가 어렸을 때는 국경일에 당연히 태극기를 달았었는데, 요즘은 동참하는 가정이 많지 않은 것 같습니다. 사람들은 국경일을 쉬는 날 또는 여행 가는 날 이라고만 생각하는 듯합니다. 우리나라를 위해 희생하신 분들을 기억하는 일에는 인색합니다.
우리는 5대 국경일과 국군의 날에 태극기를 답니다. 5대 국경일은 삼일절, 제헌절, 광복절, 개천절, 한글날입니다. 현충일은 조의를 표하는 날이라서 태극기를 다는 방법이 약간 다릅니다. 조기를 게양하는데, 이는 태극기 깃면의 세로 길이만큼 내려서 다는 것입니다.
저는 6월 6일에 태극기를 달고 잠시 묵념을 할까 합니다. 이타적인 마음으로 우리나라를 지켜주신 분들에게 감사의 마음을 표현하고 싶습니다.
