June 6th is Memorial Day, when we honor the patriotism of people who laid down their lives to protect the homeland. Every year on Memorial Day, I pay a visit to Seoul National Cemetery with my family.
My grandfather's ancestral tablet and my grandmother's ashes have been laid to rest there. My grandfather was killed in action in 1950 during the Korean War. Even now, over 70 years later, his reamins have not been found. My grandmother was widowed by the war, and my mom remembers her father's face only through pictures.
In 2000, our Ministry of Defense lanunched a project to excavate the remains of soliders killed in action. Around 13,000 remains have been recovered to date. Still, reamins of too many national defense heroes are exposed to the elements. I sincerely hope that all those lost heros, not just my grandfather, will soon be returned to the country they helped to prtect.
6월 6일은 국토 방위에 목숨을 바친 이들의 애국심을 기리는 현충일이다. 나는 해마다 현충일에 가족과 함께 국립 서울 현충원을 찾는다.
현충원에는 외할아버지의 위패와 외할머니의 유골이 안치되어 있다. 외할아버지는 1950년 한국 전쟁에서 전사하셨는데, 70여 년이 지난 지금까지도 유골을 찾지 못하고 있다. 외할머니께서는 전쟁으로 남편을 여의셨고 나의 어머니는 아버지의 얼굴을 사진으로만 기억하신다.
2000년에 우리나라 국방부에서는 전사자들의 유해 발굴 사업을 시작했다. 지금까지 13,000여 정도의 유해를 발굴했다. 그럼에도 아직 산야에 남겨진 호국 영웅들의 유해가 너무나 많다. 나의 외할아버지뿐만 아니라, 수습되지 못한 그 모든 영웅들이 자신들이 수호한 조국의 품으로 조속히 돌아오기를 간절히 바란다.
