<본문>
Difficulties when learning Korean.
I recently made friends with a Malaysian woman who speaks English like a native. She wants to learn Korean, and I need opportunities to brush up on my English. So, we meet up regularly to help each other out with our language studies.
When she gets mixed up about Korean expressions or grammar, she asks me for help. It's really difficult to explan the subtle differences in meaning created by different work endings or particles. I especially had a tough time thinking of an appropriate answer when she asked about the difference between the particles '는' and '가.' The honorifics and SinoKorean words that are characteristic of Korean are also hard to explain.
Observing her Korean studies every day, I am constantly reminded that Korean really is difficult to master. I hope that she will overcome her difficulties and quickly become fluent in Korean.
한국어 학습의 어려움.
나는 최근에 영어를 모국어처럼 구사하는 말레이시안인과 친구가 되었다. 그녀는 한국어를 배우고 싶어하고 나는 영어를 연습할 기회가 필요한 터라, 우리는 주기적으로 만나서 서로 어학 공부를 돕고 있다.
그녀는 한국어 표현이나 문법이 헷갈리면 나한테 도움을 요청한다. 그런데 어미 혹은 조사의 변화에 따른 미묘한 의미 차이를 설명하는 것은 참으로 난감하다. 특히 그녀가 조사 '는'과 '가'의 차이를 물었을 때는 적절한 답을 생각하느라 한참 씨름을 하기도 했다. 한국어 특유의 존댓말과 한자어 표현을 설명하는 것 역시 쉽지 않다.
매일 그녀의 한국어 학습을 지켜보면서 나는 한국어가 정말 숙달하기 어려운 언어라는 점을 계속 실감하고 있다. 부디 그녀가 난관을 극복하고 빨리 한국어를 능숙하게 구사하기를 바란다.
