I live in Beolgyo, Jeollanam-do Province. The region is famed for its cockles. Many people are of the opinion that Beolgyo and cockles are synonymous with each other.
Cockles from the Beolgyo region are so delicious because the local tidal flats are unpolluted and well-preserved. They have even been inscribed as a world natural heritage site by UNESCO. Beolgyo cockles are considered the cream of the crop because they live in such clean and nutrient-rich conditions.
Cockles are rich in protein and amino acids. They contain high concentrations of iron, so they are a great health food for women who suffer from anemia and children.
