Living in Beijing.
In early 2020, my husband was assigned to an overseas office of his company in Beijing. I was hard at work at a job of my own at the time, so the news caught me off guard. But after giving it a lot of thought, I decided to take time off from work and accompany my husband to Beijing.
My top priority was that I didn't want to our family to be apart. It was also a big plus that our child would attend an international school with top-notch facilities. I was sure she would be able to experience a great deal, studying in English with friends from all over the world. She struggled to adjust to the new surroundings at first, but she is doing just fine at school now.
I also had a lot of ups and downs at first, since I didn't speak a lick of Chinese. I started to study the language, thinking that I couldn't just be illiterate. This new attempt at learning a new language is still ongoing.
베이징 살이.
2020년 초, 남편이 베이징 해외 지사로 발령을 받았다. 그 당시 나는 직장에서 한창 열심히 일하고 있었기에 그 소식은 무척이나 당황스러웠다. 그러나 많은 고민 끝에 직장을 휴직하고 남편을 따라 베이징으로 가기로 결심했다.
나는 무엇보다 우리 가족이 떨어져 지내는 것을 원치 않았다. 그리고 아이가 최고 수준의 시설을 갖춘 국제 학교에 다니게 된다는 점이 큰 매력으로 다가왔다. 다양한 국적의 친구들과 영어로 공부하면서 다채로운 경험을 쌓을 수 있을 거라고 확신했다. 아이는 처음에 새로운 환경에 적응하느라 고생을 많이 했지만, 지금은 학교생활을 아주 잘하고 있다.
나 역시 중국어를 전혀 할 줄 몰라서, 처음에는 많은 좌충우돌을 겪었다. 적어도 문맹에서는 벗어나야겠다는 생각으로 어학 공부를 시작했다. 새로운 언어를 배워 보겠다는 이 새로운 도전은 여전히 진행 중 이다.
