Talk about campaigns to reduce the use of plastics.
플라스틱 사용 줄이기 캠페인에 대해 이야기해 주세요.


Korea alone produces a staggering 8 million tons of plastic waste every year. The recycling rate, or the amount of the waste reused to make new products, is around 22%. That's nowhere near the EU average of 40%. Unlike paper, the quality of plastic degrades with repeated use, so there are limits to recycling. Reducing both production and consumption is the only way.
More and more, this realization is becoming widespread. Campaigns to reduce plastics are in full swing in Korea. The government recently announced plans to cut by half the amount of plastic waste by 2030. Companies are getting on board, trying to reduce the use of plastics in their products. A good example is the policy of getting rid of plastic straws in coffee shops.

Using plastic seriously harms the environment. The whole world is joining in to reduce its use. Individuals should also do their part by reducing their use of plastic bags and disposable containers.


[해석]

우리나라에서만 한 해 배출되는 플라스틱 쓰레기는 자그마치 800만 톤에 달한다. 이 중 다시 제품을 만드는 데 사용되는 재활용률은 대략 22퍼센트이다. 이는 EU 평균치인 40퍼센트에 한 참 못 미치는 수준이다. 종이와는 달리 플라스틱은 반복해서 사용할수록 품질이 떨어져서, 재활용하는 데 한계가 있다. 결국 생산과 소비를 모두 줄이는 것이 유일한 해결책이다.
이러한 인식이 점점 확산되면서, 우리나라에서도 플라스틱 덜 쓰기 운동이 활발하게 진행 중이다. 최근 정부는 2030년까지 플라스틱 쓰레기를 절반으로 줄이겠다는 계획을 발표했다. 기업들도 제품에 플라스틱 사용을 줄이고자 동참하고 있다. 커피숍에서 빨대를 없애는 정책이 좋은 예이다.

플라스틱 사용은 환경에 심각한 해를 끼치기 때문에 전 세계가 플라스틱 사용 줄이기에 동참하고 있다. 개인들도 비닐봉지와 일회용기 사용 줄이기에 각자의 역할을 다해야 한다.
