The key function of the news media is to guarantee the public's right to know. It has oversight of social systems and institutions. The media must also bring to light corruption and social injustice. By carrying out these duties, it keeps the government and corporations in check, and prevents abuses of power.
The most important things when performing these roles are objectivity and accuracy. It's important to provide accurate reports grounded on facts and evidence. The media must also be fair and free of bias. If the media cozied up to certain groups and manipulated public opinion, it would undermine democracy.
There is concern over yellow journalism and biased reporting these days. The news media must fulfill its proper roles and responsibilities to achieve social justice.

언론의 가장 중요한 기능은 시민들의 알 권리를 보장하는 것이다. 사회 시스템과 제도가 잘 작동되고 있는지 감시해야 한다. 언론은 또한 부정부패와 사회 부조리를 밝혀내야 한다. 이러한 역할을 수행하면서, 정부와 기업을 견제하고 권력 남용을 막는다.
이러한 역할을 수행함에 있어서 가장 중요한 것은 객관성과 정확성이다. 사실과 증거에 입각한 정확한 보도를 하는 것이 중요하다. 언론은 또한 공정하고 중립적이어야 한다. 언론이 특정 세력과 유착해서 여론을 조작하면, 민주주의를 저해하게 된다.
