POSTED AT 2019.10.15 06:55 | POSTED IN STUDY/ENGLISH

[Extra Topics for Study Groups]

1. Do you think housing in Korea is too expensive? Why or why not?
2. Why is housing in some neighborhoods more expensive than in others?
3. What are some housing policy measures you would support?

STEP 1

Talk about the government's housing policies that were announced last year.

[Response]

Housing prices have risen sharply in the past few years. The government enacted policies late last year attempting to stabliize the real estate market. These real estate policies had an effect. The skyrocketing prices of housing have been curbed. One policy that took effect regulated mortgage loans. Another measure was to increase tax rates, so that people with several homes would pay more property tax. The last measure was to build more apartments by developing new residential cities.

[Response]

Housing prices have begun creeping up again. The government announced additional measures for the real estate market to tackle the problem. They are follow-up measures, on the heels of real estate policies announced in september of last year. The government announced that it will start imposing price caps on new apartment built by private companies. Such price caps have already been in place in public companies. The government also announced that it will strengthen restrictions on reselling newly build apartments. These follow-up measures are aimed at discouraging speculative real estate investments.
