In the past, comic book shops where you could borrow comic books had a bad rep. They brought to mind dark atmospheres filled with cigarette smoke. However, these spaces have received a makeover as comic book cafes. The interior atmosphere has been spruced up with colorful designs including cartoon characters. The cafes have become spaces to take a break, reading comic books while sitting back in comfortable chairs. Visitors can also snack on popular drinks or light bites. This is why comic book cafes are all the rage among young people as great date destinations. Sometimes, they are packed with young people and you can't get in right away. As icing on the cake, even the fees won't set you back much.

예전에 만화책을 대여할 수 있었던 만화방들은 이미지가 썩 좋지 않았다. 담배 연기가 자욱한 어두운 분위기가 연상되었다. 그러나 이러한 공간들이 요즘에는 만화 카페로 탈바꿈했다. 만화 캐릭터 등의 알록달록한 디자인으로 실내 분위기를 산뜻하게 꾸몄다. 편한 의자에 앉아서 만화를 보며 편안히 휴식을 취할 수 있는 공간이 되었다. 또한, 일반 음료나 간식도 사 먹을 수 있다. 그래서 요즘 만화 카페는 젊은이들의 좋은 데이트 코스로도 각광을 받고 있다. 때로는 젊은 사람들로 붐벼서 바로 들어가지 못할 정도다. 금상첨화로 이용로도 많이 부담스러운 편이 아니다.

만화 캐릭터
상품화된 만화 주인공 등을 '캐릭터'라고 부르는 경우가 많은데, 영어로 character는 말 그대로 '인물'이나 '등장인물'을 뜻한다. 따라서 '캐릭터'를 말할 때는 반드시 animated character, cartoon character 등으로 명시해야 혼동을 피할 수 있다.
예) My lunchbox is decorated with cartoon characters. (내 도시락 통에는 캐릭터 장식이 있다.)
