<말하기 연습>
After retiring from 35 years in public service, I was adjusting to everyday life. That's when my daughter had a baby, and I started helping out with childcare. Two years later, my second grandchild was born, and I am now in my eighth year of "grandparent childcare."
35년간 공직 생활을 마치고 일상에 적응하고 있던 때였다. 딸이 아기를 낳으면서 나도 육아를 함께하게 되었다. 2년 뒤에 둘째 손주까지 태어나면서 벌써 황혼 육아 8년 차가 되었다.

I went to my daughter's house twice a week, and did my best to take care of the kids. They finished preschool and started elementary school. One day, my granddaughter asked me why I was always so good to them. I told her it was because I had always felt sorry that I couldn't do more for her mom, since we were a double-income family.
주 2회 딸 집으로 가서 정성껏 손주들을 돌봤다. 아이들은 유치원을 거쳐 어느새 초등학생이 되었다. 하루는 손녀가 자기들에게 왜 이렇게 잘해 주시느냐고 물었다. 나는 맞벌이하느라 네 엄마에게 잘해 주지 못한 게늘 미안해서 그렇다고 대답했다.

My granddaughter said innocently, "It's okay. Mom turned out great, didn't she?" That kindhearted comment instantly washed away all the fatigue of childcare. Watching the kids grow up so quickly fills me with joy and a sense of fulfillment that's hard to put into workds.
그러자 손녀는 천진하게 말했다. "괜찮아요. 엄마는 지금 잘되셨잖아요, 맞죠?" 그 따뜻한 한마디가 황혼 육아의 고단함을 단번에 싹 잊게 해 주었다. 하루가 다르게 쑥쑥 자라는 아이들을 보고 있으면 말로 형언할 수 없는 기쁨과 큰 보람을 느낀다.
