My Husband's Dementia.
남편의 치매.

<말하기 연습>
My husband is 84 years old this year. He was diagnosed with congnitive impairment at eighty, and now it has progressed into Alzheimer's. Ar first, I couldn't make sense of his behavior. He always had a good sense of humor, so I thought he was just joking around with me.
저희 남편은 올해 여든네 살입니다. 여든 살에 인지 장애 진단을 받았고 지금은 알츠하이머로 진행된 상태입니다. 처음에는 남편의 행동을 도무지 이해할 수 없었습니다. 평소에도 유머가 넘치는 사람이었기에 그저 저에게 장난을 치는 줄로만 알았습니다.

These days, he goes to an adult day-care center and does well there. Thankfully, his symptoms are considered "gentle dementia," so he stays pretty calm. Maybe it's because he used to work at a bank, but he can still do basic arithmetic perfectly. Every morning, I dress him neatly in matching colors before he leaves.
지금은 주간 보호 센터에 잘 다니고 있고, 다행히도 증상이 "착한 치매"라 불릴 만큼 평온합니다. 전직 은행원 출신이라 그런지 아직도 사칙 연산은 정확히 합니다. 저는 매일 아침 남편을 색깔을 맞춰 깔끔하게 옷을 입혀 보냅니다.

On weekends and holidays when he's at home, we go on walks to get some sun, just like the doctor recommended. I try to give him different kinds of stimulation by visiting museums and art galleries. I want to do everything I can now, so that I won't have regrets once he leaves this world. When I think about how he silently sacrificed for our family when he was younger, I get choked up sometimes.
남편이 집에 있는 주말이나 휴일에는 의사의 조언대로 햇볕을 쬐기 위해 산책을 합니다. 박물관과 미술관도 다니며 남편에게 다양한 자극을 주려고 노력합니다. 남편이 저 세상으로 떠난 뒤 후회하지 않기 위해 저는 지금 최선을 다하고 싶습니다. 젊은 시절 가족을 위해 묵묵히 희생했던 남편을 떠올리면 가슴이 뭉클해질 때가 많습니다.
