Yesterday, I took the OPIc exam. OPIc is a personalized speaking test taken on a computer. To a certain extent, I can choose the topic and level of difficulty. I found it appealing because it focuses on natural speaking ability rather than rote memorization or grammar.
나는 어제 OPIc 시험을 쳤다. OPIc은 컴퓨터로 치르는 개인 맞춤형 말하기 시험으로, 내가 주제나 난이도를 어느 정도 정할 수 있다. 단순 암기나 문법이 아닌, 자연스러운 말하기 실력을 중시하는 시험이어서 매력적으로 느껴졌다.

At the test room yesterday, there was a female student who was consulting with the supervisor in front of the door. She looked like she was in her twenties, and she said that she couldn't go through with the test becasue she was freaking out. I still remember her trembling hands and eyes. The 40-minite test began after a 20-minute orientation. Fortunately, the questions were on somewhat ordinary topics like recycling and movies, and I was able to handle them.
어제 시험장에서 한 여학생이 감독관과 문 앞에서 이야기를 나누고 있었다. 그 여학생은 20대 쯤으로 보였는데, 너무 떨려서 시험을 못 치르겠다고 했다. 아직도 그 학생의 떨리는 손과 눈을 잊을 수가 없다. 20분간의 오리엔테이션 후 40분간의 시험이 시작되었다. 다행히도 질문이 재활용, 영화 등 다소 평이한 주제에 대한 것이어서 나는 잘 해결할 수 있었다.

OPIc is a test recognized by more than 1,700 companies and universities, and is taken by hundreds of thousands of people evey year. It was a good opportunity to assess my English speaking ability. Plus, it motivated me to take my English studies even further.
OPIC은 1,700개가 넘는 기업과 대학에서도 인정하는 시험으로, 매년 수십만 명의 사람들이 응시한다. 나의 영어 말하기 능력을 가늠할 수 있는 좋은 기회였고, 또한 영어 공부를 더 해야겠다는 자극제도 되었다.

B: 해 봐요! 자신의 실력 점검도 되고, 공부에 좋은 자극이 돼요.

<영작 연습>
1. 그걸 처음 먹어보는 사람들은 그리 매력적으로 느껴지지 않을지도 모른다.
People eating it for the first time might not find it appealing.
2. 때로는 단순 암기가 최고의 방법이다.
Sometimes, rote memorization is the best method.
3. 끝까지 하지 않을 거라면, 아예 시작을 하지 마.
If you're not goint to go through with it, don't start at all.
4. 누구나 최고 등급에 도달할 수 있는 것은 아니다.
Not everone can reach the highest level.
5. 때로는 두려움이 좋은 자극이 되기도 한다.
Fear can sometimes be a good motivator.
