Reading Books in English. 영어 원서 읽기.

For me, reading is a hobby that feels like an old friend. I decided to major in English in college. I had big dreams of college life, confidently walking through campus while carrying armfuls of English books.
나에게 있어 독서는 오랜 친구 같은 취미이다. 나는 대학에서 영어를 전공하기로 했다. 영어 원서를 가득 들고 폼나게 캠퍼스를 누비는 대학 생활에 대한 부푼 꿈이 있었던 것이다.

I was deeply moved by the subtlety and rich expressiveness of the Korean translation of Jane Austen's "Emma." Curious as to how the original English version would feel, I excitedly reread it after entering college. However, reality posed an imposing barrier. The delicate touch of the Korean translation was nowhere to be found, and all I felt were my own limitations.
제인 오스틴의 소설 "엠마"의 우리말 번역본을 읽고 그 섬세함과 풍부한 표현력에 깊은 감동을 받았다. 원작 영문본은 어떤 느낌일지 궁금해서 대학 입학 후 설레는 마음으로 다시 읽어 보았다. 그러나 현실의 벽은 매우 높았다. 우리말 번역본의 섬세함은 온데간데 없고, 내 실력의 한계만 느껴졌다.

However, as I read the book over and over again during the vacation, I started to write down my favorite. I tried constantly to familiarize myself with the original text. As a result of all my hard work, I feel a sense of personal growth every time I finish reading a book in its original English.
하지만, 방학 동안 그 책을 여러 번 반복해서 읽으며 좋아하는 구절을 적어 놓기 시작했다. 이렇게 원서와 더 가까워지기 위해 끊임없이 노력했다. 이러한 노력의 결과로 나는 영어 원서 한 권을 다 읽을 때마다 내 자신이 성장하는 느낌을 받는다.
