Protecting Endangered Animals.
CITES is a convention on the global trade of wild, endangered plants and animals. It was put into effect in 1975 to prevent existential threats against endangered species. Korea signed on to the agreement in 1993. 38,700 species are currently under the protection of the convention.
When I was working for an international organization a few years ago, I encounted cases of the illegal trafficking of CITES-protected species. I saw enlephant tusks, rhnio horns, and pangolins frozen solid after their scales had been removed.
Tusks and horns are considered good luck charms, and pangolins are believed to be health food. It made me sad that the animals are under threat for such reasons. Humans are not the sole owners of planet Earth. I hope we will find a way to live in harmony with other species.
CITES란 멸종 위기에 처한 야생 동식물의 국제 거래에 관한 협약입니다. 멸종 위기종의 생존 위협을 방지하기 위해 1975년에 발효되었고, 우리나라는 1993년에 이 협약에 가입했습니다. 현재 이 협약에 의해 보호받는 동식물 38,700종입니다.
몇 년 전 저는 국제 기구에서 일하는 동안 CITES 보호종의 불법 밀거래 적발 사례를 접할 수 있었습니다. 코끼리의 상아와 코뿔소의 뿔, 비늘이 다 벗겨진 채로 꽁꽁 얼어붙어 있는 천산갑을 보았습니다.
상아나 뿔은 행운을 가져다 주는 부적으로 여겨지고, 천산갑은 보양식으로 잘 알려져 있습니다. 그런 이유로 동물들이 생존의 위협을 받고 있다는 사실이 너무 안타까웠습니다. 인간만이 지구의 주인은 아닙니다.저는 우리가 다른 종들과 더불어 살아 갈 수 있는 방법을 찾았으면 합니다.
