Kendo.
I started taking a great interest in my health this year. It got me thinking about how to get some exercise. At first, I looked into yoga and Pilates because they are all the rage these days. But they were too expensive and didn't seem right for me. I also tried home workouts, but it didn't work because of my tendency to procrastinate.
Then, I happended upon a kendo studio in our neighborhood. I visited the studio and signed up for lessons on the spot. We took measurement for a protective uniform, and I started two day later.
It took a whole month at first just to learn the basic positions. Then, I learned increasingly difficult techniques. I am still in a beginner's class, but today I stuck a tire with my jukdo for the first time. Swinging a jukdo while wearing a kendo uniform is physically exhausting, but I like the way I look in the mirror.

올해 들어 나는 건강에 관심이 더 많아져서, 어떻게 운동을 하면 좋을지 고민해 보게 되었다. 처음에는 요즘 한창 유행하는 요가와 필라테스를 알아봤다. 그런데 너무 비싸기만하고 나에게 안 맞을 것 같았다. 홈 트레이닝도 시도해 봤지만, 내 게으른 성격 때문에 효과가 없었다.
그러다 우연히 동네에 있는 검도관을 알게 되었다. 나는 검도관을 방문해서 그날 바로 수강 등록을 했다. 몸의 치수를 재고 검도복을 맞췄고, 이틀 후부터 시작했다.
처음에는 기본 자세만 배우는 데 꼬박 한 달이 걸렸다. 그러면서 점점 어려운 동작을 배워 나갔다. 아직 초급자 반이지만, 오늘 처음으로 죽도로 타이어를 치게 되었다. 검도복을 입고 죽도를 휘두르는 것이 체력적으로 힘들긴 하지만, 거울 속에 비친 내 모습이 너무 마음에 든다.
