Talk about reading untranslated English books.
Ever since October 2022, I have been diligently reading books in their original English. The first untranslated English book I read was a picture book of "Puss in Boots." I got it at a used bookstore. I was taken by surprise because there were many words I was not familiar with, even though it was a kid's book.
After that, I bought and read several books in a graded series. They are educational books with vocabulary and sentence structures that are appropriate for each reading level. So, it wasn't that hard to read them all.
I started to gain confidence, so then I started reading story books by authors like Roald Dahl. After that, I took on the Harry Potter series. The vocabulary was hard and the books were all massive tomes. So, it took me 11 months to get through all 7 books.
Nowadays, I have set myself a goal of reading about one book per month. I find the books to read by searching through bookstores, both on and offline.
저는 2020년 10월부터 지금까지 영어 원서를 꾸준히 읽어 왔습니다. 처음 읽은 영어 원서는 "장화 신은 고양이" 그림 동화책이었습니다. 저는 그 책을 중고 서점에서 구입했습니다. 어린이용 책인데도 모르는 단어들이 여러 개 나와서 깜짝 놀랐습니다.
그 다음으로는 단계별 시리즈로 된 책을 여러 권 사서 읽었습니다. 각 독해 수준에 맞는 어휘와 문장 구조들로 이루어진 교육용 책이라서, 생각보다는 어렵지 않게 읽을 수 있었습니다.
슬슬 자신감이 붙어서 다음은 로알드 달 등의 작가들이 쓴 동화책들을 읽기 시작했습니다. 그 후로는 해리포터 시리즈에 도전했습니다. 어휘도 어려웠고 책도 매우 두꺼워서, 7권을 모두 읽는 데 11개월이 걸렸습니다.
요즘은 한 달에 한 권 정도 읽는 것을 목표로 하고 있습니다. 읽을 책들은 온라인과 오프라인 서점을 샅샅이 뒤져서 찾고 있습니다.
