Talk about your mother-in-law's sikhye.
I've been married for 20 years. Whenever we visit my wife's family, my mother-in-law makes sikhye from scratch. Sikhye is a traditional beverage of Korea. It's made by pouring malt water on rice and boiling it until it is sweet. My mother-in-law's sikhye really hits the spot because it's not too sweet.
We haven't been able to visit her for 3 years because of COVID-19, so my mother-in-law sikhye and had it sent to us. My father-in-law double bagged it plastic to make sure it doesn't leak. Then, he packaged it in an ice box to sent to us.
We rang them up to let them know we received it. I had mixed feelings as I sampled the sikhye. They must have gone through a lot of trouble to make it and sent it to us. But it was so cool and refreshing! I felt very thankful for the way they always look out for us.
결혼한 지 20년이 지났는데, 처가에 가면 장모님께서 항상 식혜를 직접 담가 주신다. 식혜는 우리나라 전통 음료이다. 쌀밥에 엿기름 우린 물을 부어 단맛이 나도록 끊여서 만든다. 장모님 식혜는 너무 달지 않아서 맛이 정말 좋다.
코로나 때문에 3년 동안 찾아뵙지 못해서, 장모님께서 식혜를 담가 우리에게 보내 주셨다. 장인 어른께서는 식혜가 새지 않도록 두 겹으로 묶고 나서, 아이스박스에 꼼꼼히 포장해서 보내셨다.
우리는 잘 받았다고 알려 드리려고 두 분께 전화를 드렸다. 식혜를 마시는데 만감이 교차했다. 만들어 보내시는데 얼마나 고생을 많이 하셨을까. 그런데 식혜가 너무 시원하고 상쾌했다! 항상 우리를 생각해 주시는 마음이 너무나도 감사하게 느껴졌다.
