Living in a New Town.
New towns are planned cities that are planned out from the earliest stages. There are several new towns in Korea's capital area. They form large-scale residential areas.
When our family moved to a new town three years ago, there was nothing but apartment complexes. There weren't any neighborhood conveniences nearby. My wife and I both commute to and from Seoul, but public transport isn't as available as it is in the city. This is a major pain. We bought another car, but it's a three-hour round-trip commute.
To be sure, there are many more shops now in the commercial buildings, and public transport has made strides. More than anything, it feels good to return to the neigborhood. Our house feels roomy and comfortable because it's a new apartment. Plus, the neighborhood doesn't have all the hustle and bustle of Seoul.
신도시는 처음부터 계획적으로 만들어진 도시를 말한다. 우리나라 수도권에는 신도시가 여러 개 있고, 대규모 주거 단지를 형성하고 있다.
3년 전 우리 가족이 신도시에 이사 왔을 때는 아파트 단지만 덩그러니 있었다. 주변에 동네 편의 시설이 아무것도 없었다. 아내와 나는 서울로 출퇴근을 하는데, 대중교통도 서울처럼 잘 되어 있지 않아서 무척 불편하다. 자동차를 한 대 더 사기도 했지만, 하루 출퇴근에만 왕복 3시간이 소요된다.
물론, 지금은 상가 건물에 가게들이 많이 생겼고, 대줄교통도 많이 좋아지긴 했다. 무엇보다도, 동네로 돌아오면 기분이 좋다. 집이 새 아파트라서 넗고 쾌적하다. 게다가 동네도 서울처럼 북적북적하지 않다.
