Talk about your experience of raising insects at home.

Last autumn, my father caught two caterpillars a tree in front of my home. He put them in a specimen case for his grandson. I had my doubts about raising them properly at home. But my son was so interested in nature that we decided to give it a go and raise the moth larvae.

The green caterpillars fed on tree leaves and grew bigger and bigger. Observing them with my son was unexpectedly fun. In the past, bugs gave me the creeps. But after seeing them so often, they even looked a little cute.

The caterpillars later turned brown, and burrowed underground where they made their cocoons. One morning about a month later, we found two pretty moths sitting outside the dirt. My son was beside himself, seeing the moths we had raised ourselves. We carefully let the moths go. Seeing them fly away, I had a lump in my throat.

집에서 곤충을 길러본 경험에 대해 이야기해 주세요.

지난 가을, 저희 아버지가 집 앞 나무에서 애벌레 두 마리를 잡아 손자를 위해 채집통에 넣어 주셨습니다. 저는 집에서 애벌레를 잘 키울 수 있을지 자신이 없었습니다. 그런데 아들이 자연에 매우 관심이 많아서 나방 유충들을 한번 키워보기로 결심했습니다.

초록색 애벌레들은 나뭇잎을 먹으며 점점 자랐습니다. 아들과 함께 애벌레들을 관찰하는 것은 의외로 재미있었습니다. 예전에는 벌레가 끔찍하다고 생각했는데, 자주 보니 좀 귀여워 보이기까지 했습니다.

애벌레들은 이후 갈색으로 변하더니 흙 밑으로 파고들어가 고치를 만들었습니다. 약 한 달 쯤 지난 어느 날 아치, 예쁜 나방 두마리가 흙 밖에 앉아 있는 걸 발견했습니다. 아들은 우리가 직접 키운 나방을 모며 무척 기뻐했습니다. 우리는 조심스럽게 나방들을 놓아주었습니다. 나방들이 날아가는 모습을 보니, 뭉클한 느낌이 들었습니다.
