[STEP1] 자원봉사 활동에 대해 이야기해 주세요.

사람들은 다양한 장소에서 다양한 방법으로 자원봉사를 한다. 좋은 취지로 돈을 기부하는 것도 보람된 일이다. 그러나 자원봉사는 직접 가서 본인의 시간과 노력을 쏟는 것이기 때문에 더욱 큰 의미가 있다. 고아원, 장애인 복지 시설, 노인 요양원 등에서 자원봉사 활동을 하는 경우가 많다. 개인적으로 참여하는 경우도 있고, 가족들이나 동료들과 함께 단체로 가는 경우도 있다. 이렇게 자원봉사 활동을 하면 정말 뿌듯한 기분을 느낄 수 있다.

Talk about volunteering.

People do volunteer work in different ways, and in various places. Donating money for a good cause also feels rewarding. But volunteering is even more meaningful. You have to go in person, and invest your time and effort. People often volunteer at orphanages, welfare facilities for the disabled, and nursing homes. Some go on their own. Others visit in groups with family members or coworkers. Volunteering this way can really make you feel a sense of pride.

나는 한 종교 단체에서 운영하는 고아원에서 정기적으로 봉사활동을 한다. 가서 청소나 빨래도 하고, 음식도 하고, 아이들의 공부를 도와주기도 한다. 작년부터는 고등학생인 딸도 데리고 가서 매우 의미가 있다. 처음에는 봉사 점수를 받으려고 시작했지만, 지금은 아이가 원해서 하고 있다. 딸아이도 봉사 활동을 통해서 타인을 배려하고, 남에게 도움의 손길을 주는 것을 배우고 있다. 아이의 인성을 기르고, 아이가 이기적인 사람이 되지 않고 더 좋은 사람이 될 수 있도록 도움이 되는 것 같다.

Talk about your personal volunteering experience.

On a regular basis, I volunteer at an orphanage operated by a religious organization. I go to tidy up the place, do the laundry, cook food, and help the kids with their studies. Since last year, I've also bought my daughter, a high-school student. It's very meaningful. She started in order to get community service credit at first, but now she does it of her own accord. By volunteering, she is learning to be considerate and offer a helping hand to others. I think it's helping her build character and become a better, unselfish person.
