Many people in Korea take an interest when the national team has a big match. Some watch the match on TV at home, but others gather in the streets to cheer in groups. Huge screens are set up in major plazas or squares. Everyone cheers on the team together. People wear uniforms in red, the national color. This culture of large-scale street cheering established itself in 2002. That's when Korea hosted the World Cup. Korea had great results, and everyone got into soccer.

The Korean national team made history at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, held in Poland last June. It was the first time Korea made the finals at a FIFA men's event, which was a huge accomplishment. The matches were mostly held in the small hours, Korea time, but the whole nation stayed up to cheer for the national team. The players hit a wall physically when they took on Ukraine in the final match. They lost and became the runners-up. Still, everybody was deeply moved by the way the players gave it their all.
