Even when I buy clothes that suit my fancy, I sometimes have to have them altered. I recently bought a new jacket, and the sleeves were a bit too long. I had to have the length adjusted at a tailor's. I've had clothes altered most often with pants. I've shortened the inseam, and altered the cuffs. I've also extended the waistline when I put on some weight. One time, the pant legs were too wide, so I got them fixed to be narrower. Sometimes, I need to have clothes mended when I have a run in the fabric, or when there is a tear. I can attach a button myself if it falls off. However, if I lose the button, I have to visit a tailor to get a similar button. Altering and mending clothes offers many benefits, since you can dress in style, and wear clothes longer.

마음에 드는 옷을 사더라도 수선을 해야 하는 경우가 있다. 최근에 새 재킷을 샀는데, 팔 길이가 조금 길었다. 수선 업체에 가서 길이를 줄여서 입어야 했다. 바지를 샀을 때 가장 수선을 많이 했다. 바지의 기장을 줄인 적도 있고, 바지의 밑단을 수선한 적도 있다. 살이 좀 쪄서 허리를 늘린 적도 있다. 한번은 바지의 통이 너무 커서 통을 줄이는 수선을 한 적도 있다. 옷에 올이 풀리거나 구멍이 나서 수선을 해야 하는 경우도 있다. 단추가 떨어진 경우, 내가 직접 바느질을 해서 달 수 있다. 그렇지만 단추를 잃어버리면, 수선업체에 가서 비슷한 단추로 달아야 한다. 이처럼 옷을 수선하면 예쁘게 입을 수 있고, 좀 더 오래 입을 수 있어서 장점이 많다.

우리가 말하는 '의류 수선'은 옷을 더욱 잘 맞거나 맵시 있게 개선하기 위한 것과, 낡거나 찢어진 부분을 고치는 것을 모두 일컫지만, 영어에서는 두 경우에 사용하는 표현이 다르다. 전자는 alter, 후자는 mend나 fix라는 단어를 사용한다. 참고로 리폼, 즉 reform이라는 표현은 잘 사용하지 않으며, 이는 alter에 포함된다고 봐도 무방하다.
