Bitter Vacation, Sweet Semester.
방학은 쓰지만, 개학은 달다.

<말하기 연습>
I have a sixth-grade daughter who doesn't go to any after-school academies, and a fourth-grade son who goes to a taekwondo studio. Every time school break approaches, I start feeling anxious about a month in advance. My kids look after themselves pretty well, but just having the two of them together all day long is exhausting.
내게는 학원을 하나도 다니지 않는 6학년 딸과 태권도장만 다니는 4학년 아들이 있다. 나는 늘 학교 방학이 다가오면 한 달 전부터 심란해진다. 남매가 알아서 잘 하는 편이기는 하지만, 하루 종일 아이들이 함께 있는 것만으로도 부담스럽다.

I used to pledge to myself that I would make the most of school breaks and spend meaningful time with the kids. But reality turned out to be a lot tougher than I imagined. Of course, I love spending time with my kids. Still, that doesn't make it any less tiring. Cooking three different meals every day, plus preparing snacks really wears you out.
예전에는 방학을 알차게 활용해 아이들과 의미 있는 시간을 보내야 겠다고 굳게 다짐했었다. 그러나 현실은 생각과 달리 녹록지 않았다. 물론 아이들과 함께하는 시간은 행복하기 그지없다. 그래도 힘든 건 힘든 거다. 매일 하루 세 깨를 다른 찬으로 밥을 차리고, 간식까지 대령해야 하니 몸이 피곤한건 어쩔 수 없다.

Today, the kids finally went back to school. But my relief did not last long. They'll be on spring break again in just a week. I'm smiling, but honestly, I could cry.
오늘 드디어 남매가 개학을 했다. 하지만 기쁜도 잠시, 불과 일주일 후면 다시 봄 방학에 들어간다. 이 사실에 나는 웃고 있어도 눈물이 난다.
