Instant Coffee Mix
나의 첫사랑 "커피믹스"

<말하기 연습>
When I was in 7th grade, my homeroom teacher gave each of us ten flat, rectangular packets of instant coffee mix during midterms. He told us to dip our fingers in and eat a little at a time without water, to help us study at night.
내가 중학교 1학년 때 담임 선생님께서 중간고사 기간 동안 직사각형의 납작한 커피믹스 봉지를 반 아이들에게 각각 10개씩 주셨다. 밤에 물 없이 손가락으로 찍어 먹으면서 공부하라고 하셨다.

I did exactly as he said. But it wasn't the caffeine that kept me awake. Instead, it was the flavor and aroma that did the trick. I felt alert and awake, as if my brain cells had lit up. I stayed up all night, eating bits of coffee as I studied. I only had one packet each night, to make it last.
나는 선생님 말씀을 그대로 따랐다. 그런데 카페인이 잠을 깨운다기보다는, 그 맛과 향이 너무나 좋아서 뇌세포가 살아나는 듯 잠이 사라졌다. 나는 밤새 커피를 찍어 먹으며 공부를 했다. 밤마다 한 봉지씩만 아껴서 먹었다.

That taste of coffee mix completely took over my young senses of smell and taste. Even now, I prefer the classic instant mix over espresso. And even though I started to drink coffee back in middle school, I still grew up to be taller than most of my friends.
이렇게 커피믹스의 맛은 나의 어린 시절 후각과 미각을 완전히 점령했다. 지금도 에스프레소보다는 "다방 커피"라고 불리는 커피믹스를 즐겨 마신다. 그리고 중1 때부터 커리를 즐겼음에도 나는 친구들 중에 큰 키에 속한다.

1. a little at a time 조금씩

*나는 조금씩 나아지고 있다.
  I'm getting better, a little at a time.
*한꺼번에 다 끝마치려고 하지 말고, 그냥 조금씩 해 봐.
  Just do a little at a time, instead of trying to finish all at once.
2.  keep someone awake (~을) 잠이 들지 않게 하다.
*나의 잠을 깨운 것은 카페인이 아니었다.

*나는 점심 시간 이후에 커피를 마시면 밤새 잠을 못 이룬다.
  I stay up all night if I have coffee after lunchtime.

B: Yes, that's right. It's what I usually drink when I'm at home.
A: A lot of people use coffee pod machines these days.
B: I know. But this coffee still tastes the best to me. It's what I've had since I was a kid.
A: I guess it just comes down to personal taste.
B: I think so.

A: 그거 커피믹스 커피예요?
B: 네, 맞아요. 집에 있을 때는 주로 이걸 마셔요.
A: 요즘 캡슐 커피 기계 많이 사용하잖아요.
B: 알아요. 그런데 저는 어렸을 때부너 마셨던 이 커피 맛이 아직도 가장 좋아요.
A: 취향에 맞으신가 보네요.
B: 그러가 봐요.
