Book Completion Parties.
책거리.
A book completion party is a little get-together where students thank their teacher and give each other credit after they've completed studying a book. It's tradition that's on the wane, so people who member these parties are probably getting on in years, like me.
책거리는 학생들이 책 한 권을 다 공부한 후, 스승에게 감사한 마음을 표현하고 동료들과 서로의 노고를 위로하는 작은 행사를 말한다. 지금은 사라진 관습이라서 책거리를 기억하는 사람은 아마도 나처럼 나이가 좀 있는 세대일 것이다.
It's been over two yeats since I started to get to work early, listening to the "입트영" broadcast and studying with my coworkers. We had our moments of crisis because we had a lot to do at work. And of course, being hung over after having a few too many the night before was often the biggest threat.
이른 아침에 출근하여 "입트영" 방송을 듣고 회사 동료들과 공부를 시작한 지 2년이 훌쩍 넘었다. 그간 회사 일이 많다는 이유로 위기를 겪은 적도 있었다. 물론 전날 과음을 해서 숙취 상태에 있는 것이 가장 큰 위기였던 경우가 많았다.
But we were able to keep at it all this time, partly because we treated ourselves to a book completion party at a must-eat restaurant ever time we completed a book. Studying every day is rough going sometimes, but thinking about where to have our party each month keeps us going.
하지만 우리가 지금까지 꾸준하게 공부할 수 있었던 이유 중에 하나는 바로 책 한 권을 끝낼 때마다 맛집을 찾아가서 우리만의 책거리를 즐겼기 때문이었다. 매일 공부하는 게 힘들 때도 있지만, 매달 책거리를 어디서 할지 행복한 고민을 하면 동기 부여가 되기도 한다.
