일과 개인 삶의 균형에 대해 이야기해 주세요.

 

[Model Response]

The average work hours for Korean workers are among the longest of OECD nations. Workers who are employed by corporations very often work late. People at start-ups or who run their own business work for so long that they have no concept of work hours. However, I think a balance between work and personal life is very important. I don't think focusing too much on work is advisable. After all, the purpose of doing one's best at a job is to have a happier, more leisurely life. People need time to be with friends and family after hours. In particular, parents must have time to spend with their kids. I also think having a healthy hobby that is unrelated to work is good for a change of pace. Adequate rest helps people to be more productive.

우리나라 근로자들의 연평균 근로 시간이 OECD 국가들 중에서 가장 긴 편이다. 기업에 근무하는 근로자들의 경우, 야근이 매우 잦은 것은 사실이다. 스타트업에서 일하거나 자기 사업을 하는 사람들의 경우, 아예 근무 시간의 개념 없이 계속 일만 하는 경우도 많다. 그러나 나는 일과 개인 삶의 균형이 매우 중요하다고 생각한다. 너무 일에만 집중하는 것은 바람직하지 않다고 생각한다. 일터에서 일을 열심히 하는 것도 사실 따지고 보면, 조금 더 여유 있고 행복한 삶을 살기 위한 것이다. 퇴근을 하고 나서는 가족이나 친구들과 함께할 수 있는 시간이 필요하다. 특히 아이들이 있는 부모들의 경우, 더더욱 자녀들과 보낼 수 있는 시간이 필요하다. 더불어, 일과는 관련 없는 건전한 취미 생활이 기분 전환에도 도움이 된다고 생각한다. 충분한 휴식이 좀 더 생산적으로 일을 하게 해 주기 때문이다.

[Speaking Tips]

work late
야근하다 

늦은 시간까지 일을 하는 것은 work late라고 말하는 한편, 기준 근로 시간 외에 추가 근무를 하는 것은 work overtime이라고도 표현한다. 명사 형태로 overtime이라는 말을 사용할 경우 '초과 근무 수당'을 뜻하니 혼동이 없도록 유의하자.

 

예) I can't go to the party, because I have to work late. (나 야근을 해야 돼서 파티에 갈 수 없어.)
I received overtime for working on Saturday. (나는 토요일에 근무를 해서 초과 근무 수당을 받았다.)
